VitaDB Downloader updates add automatic installation of libshacccg.suprx and support for PSP Homebrew

[ad_1]

Vita dev Rinnegatamante has pushed out a major update to the latest Nightly version of VitaDB Downloader, an “app store” for your homebrew-enabled PS Vita. This update adds automatic installation of libshacccg.suprx, a file required for many games and homebrew ports. Installing this file was a somewhat tedious manual process until now.

Recent VitaDB Downloader updates have also added support for PSP Homebrew games. With the amount of features and quality of life improvements, this becomes the best appstore for the PS Vita.

What is VitaDB Downloader

VitaDB is the most widely used Vita application repository for owners of homebrew compatible PS Vita consoles. The database hosts thousands of utility software and games, with a website where users can manually download homebrew themselves for manual installation on their console. It also provides an API, allowing developers to access the database programmatically. This means in particular that there are several “homebrew stores” of Vita applications which allow you to install games directly from your Vita, taking advantage of this repository.

There are several “homebrew installers” that leverage VitaDB, such as Vita Homebrew Browser (VHBB), Easy VPK, Better homebrew Browser, etc. Which one you use depends on personal preference, but Rinnegatamante (who developed and maintains VitaDB) expressed frustration that they all seem to have issues.

It was in this context that he decided to release VitaDB Downloader, which can be considered the “official” VitaDB client.

VitaDB Downloader Features

  • Search by author/homebrew name.
  • Filtering applications by category.
  • Display of all screenshots available for applications.
  • Sorting applications according to different criteria (newest, oldest, most downloaded, least downloaded, alphabetically)
  • Display of multiple metadata for applications.
  • Downloading and installing vpk+data or vpk files only at the discretion of the user. (No need to re-download data files each time you want to update a homebrew for which the data files are unchanged)
  • Minimalist GUI based on the beloved ImGui with an emphasis on robustness rather than fancy.
  • Fast Boot Time (Only the very first boot will take a little longer due to app icon downloads. Successive boots will be virtually instantaneous)
  • Low storage usage (screenshots are served on demand, the only data kept on storage are app icons with full storage usage less than 10MB).
  • Track installed apps, even when not installed via VitaDB Downloader, and their status (obsolete/updated).
  • Background music (you can customize it by changing ux0:data/VitaDB/bg.ogg with your own favorite track).
  • Background image/video (you can customize it by changing ux0:data/VitaDB/bg.mp4 or ux0:data/VitaDB/bg.png).
  • Themes support (customization of GUI elements via ux0:data/VitaDB/themes.ini) with integrated downloader and manager.

In our experience, VitaDB Downloader has proven to be extremely reliable, packed with useful features and blazing fast.

Controls

  • Left Analog or Up/Down Arrows = Move Selection
  • Circle = Cancel selection
  • Left arrow (when selection is cancelled) = return to search text box (top of list)
  • Start = Show/Hide screenshots for selected homebrew
  • L/R = Change homebrew sorting
  • X = Install homebrew

VitaDB Downloader Nightly build – what’s new

There have been 2 new versions since the last time we talked about VitaDB Downloader (which was version 1.4) not including the Nightly version we’re talking about today, so we’re putting changelogs for all those updates below.

VitaDB Downloader 2022-10-19 Nightly Version

  • Automatic installation of libshacccg.suprx

You can see it in action in the video below:

VitaDB 1.6 Downloader

  • Fixed a bug that caused VitaDB Downloader to always be flagged as outdated.
  • Added support for theme text shading (TextShadow).
  • Improved icon loading time. Now scrolling through apps will be considerably faster.
  • Fixed a bug causing potential filesystem issues due to how icons were stored internally on storage.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the app to take longer to start the more apps were downloaded from the app itself.
  • Added support for downloading and installing PSP homebrews (L will now go through Vita Homebrews, PSP Homebrews, Themes).
  • Moved the version value to the top left of the screen.
  • Added information about the current mode (Vita Homebrews, PSP Homebrews, Themes) to the top right of the screen.
  • Improved version checking of installed homebrews made in Unity, Game Maker Studio, Godot or Lua. Now they will be correctly detected as obsolete if they are.
  • Designed for Vita homebrew icons to be rendered rounded.
  • Designed so that if the connection is lost during a download, the download resumes from where it left off instead of failing the download.

VitaDB 1.5 Downloader

  • Fixed a bug causing potential crashes if you had a few specific apps installed with a very large eboot.bin file.
  • Fixed a bug that caused more than one popup to not always display under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed a bug causing the first icon of an application to be displayed incorrectly after a sort mode change, a search or a filter change.
  • Fixed a bug causing cached hash files to be incorrectly generated when installing an app (resulting in slower startup times).

  • Checking for cleanup of remaining incomplete app installs is more robust.
  • Added application name and version to changelog viewer title bar.
  • Filter text correctly aligned with search text.
  • Added padding between Filter and Sort modes.
  • Added the ability to customize the font.
  • Added the ability to properly customize any remaining non-customizable GUI elements.
  • Moved missing icons downloaded each time you tap on an app without an icon to start (for all).
  • Designed so that Tri mode can only be cycled with R.
  • Added theme downloader and manager with support for single theme and theme mix (accessible with L).
  • Moved from SoLoud to SDL2 Mixer as audio backend. (Much faster startup time for background audio playback).
  • Fixed a bug causing a crash when opening the changelog viewer under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed a bug that caused VitaDB Downloader to always be flagged as outdated.

Download VitaDB Downloader

To note
The automatic installer for libshacccg.suprx can also be downloaded separately here (nickname ShaRKBR33D), if you need this file but don’t want to use VitaDB Downloader. Although to be honest, at this point, given the benefits you get with VitaDB Downloader, I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to install it 🙂

Install it like any other VPK (reminder, you need a hacked PS Vita!). Once installed, you should be able to install any other homebrew (ie those present on VitaDB) from the VitaDB Downloader interface!
