RICHMOND, Ky. (FOX 56) — Thousands of donations from across the country poured into western Kentucky after December’s deadly tornado outbreak.

And even though it’s been three months, the support for those who have lost everything continues.

WoodSongs Old Time Radio Hour host Michael Johnathon has called on the airwaves for all and every instrument to come to Kentucky.

Johnathon’s goal was to heal tornado victims through music.

Bill Hudson and Al Coffey were just two of many who answered Johnathon’s call. The couple traveled more than 300 miles from Roanoke, Virginia to Currier’s Music World in Richmond.

“What we’re doing is bringing instruments to those who lost so much to the tornado,” Hudson said.

They deposited about fifty musical instruments.

Coffey added, “We’ve got two drum sets, two accordions, three big keyboards, we’ve got a hammered dulcimer of all things.”

It’s their way of helping the hundreds of families who are still picking up the pieces.

Cathy Currier, owner of Currier’s Music World, wasted no time in joining Johnathon’s request. She repairs the instruments that have been donated to ensure they are in good condition for the families they go to.

“It’s scary. I mean, I still had a nightmare about a tornado sometimes. I can’t imagine what these people are dealing with. It’s unreal. So when Michael said let’s do this , I said yes, it’s the least we can do,” Currier explained.

Johnathon said it was the best way for musicians to help out. “We can’t rewire streetlights and we can’t fix roads, but we can restore the soundtrack of western Kentucky, that porch music.”

Over 400 instruments from Rhode Island, Virginia and even Alaska were donated.

Guitars, pianos, drums, violins and dozens of wind instruments will now have a new home in Western Kentucky.

Johnathon said the message is “even a tornado can’t steal the joy from the human spirit, especially when the music and song are still alive and well”.

These instruments will be distributed to families in Dawson Springs, Mayfield and Owensboro.

If you have instruments to donate, WoodSongs will be in the parking lot outside Bryan Station Koger in Lexington at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.

“Your instrument is one of the most valuable and important tools in your musical career. Damage and/or destruction can lead to missed performances and/or a long-standing dissociation between you and your valuable work tool. “ chamber-music.org indicates in its Guide to flying with musical instruments. For experienced professional musicians who travel for their work, this is already well known. But for those who might not travel with an instrument, what kind of rules are in place to protect these valuable tools?

SIMPLEFLYING VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rules established by the US Department of Transportation

Generally speaking, the rules regarding flights with musical instruments vary from airline to airline, as do travel with pets. However, some civil aviation authorities (and/or their respective governments) have established broader rules to ensure a level playing field across the industry. This is the case in the United States.

In February 2012, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) enacted the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. In this official act, Section 403 notes that US air carriers are required to accept musical instruments on their passenger flights either as carriage on baggage or checked baggage, provided certain conditions are met. A summary from the US government’s Federal Register notes that the passage in Section 403 is “Congress’s Response to the Difficulties Experienced by Musicians in Transporting Their Instruments During Air Travel.”

A general consensus for cabin instruments

Although airlines may be free to set their own policies in the absence of a rule set by the respective civil aviation authorities, most airlines seem to have a similar policy. Generally speaking, small instruments can be treated as carry-on luggage, with smaller ones being considered personal items that can fit under the seat in front of the passenger.

Slightly larger instruments can fit in the luggage bins, but this will count towards the travel allowance. The biggest variance between airlines will be this category – as each airline has different dimensions for what is considered a small instrument. For British Airways, the size of the suitcase must not exceed 80 x 45 x 25 cm (31 x 18 x 10 inches) with no specified weight limit. For Virgin Atlantic, however, the figures are 23 x 36 x 56 cm (or 9 x 14 x 22 inches) while being 10 kg (or 22 lb) or less. It is therefore very important to check an airline’s policy before booking a flight.

Too big for the top tray

Where an instrument is too large for the overhead compartment but can still fit in a passenger seat, an option accepted by many airlines is for the passenger to pay for an additional seat to accommodate the instrument. This is generally the case for cellos and guitars.

Unfortunately, as the late cellist Lynn Harrell discovered in 2012, your instrument can’t collect loyalty points the way a human would to buy a seat and travel with the airline. Since this particular story predates the launch of Simple Flying, it’s a story we can hopefully cover in the future!

Finally, instruments too large to fit in a passenger seat will simply have to be carried as checked baggage. Naturally, these instruments will need extra protection (and plenty of “fragile” stickers) to survive the cargo hold conditions.

Mountain Lakes, NJ – Denville Music Academy is Denville’s #1 choice for music lessons. They offer various courses including music theory, performance, and musicality. These courses include composition, improvisation, voice, musical instruments, among other areas. Denville Music Academy also offers a bespoke program for toddlers aged five and under. The Music Together program helps develop children’s musical abilities from an early age. They have a highly personalized program that allows students to interact with highly qualified instructors. Internationally acclaimed luthier and instrument restorer Rodrigo Correa-Salas has been responsible for the care, examination, supervision and preservation of the 13,000 instruments and artifacts at the Musical Instrument Museum of Arizona since a little over four years.

Previously, he worked in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Chile and Panama. Like his move to Arizona, most of those moves were invitation-based. While living in Venezuela, he was invited to audition for the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music as a student. When he lived in Chile after graduating, he was invited to work in Panama as head luthier – a maker of stringed instruments – for orchestras across Central America.

Then, in July 2017, Correa-Salas received a call from Manuel Jordán, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of MIM, the largest instrument museum in the world, inviting him to interview in Phoenix to become the curator of the Museum.

“When I got here and saw the place, I was in love,” Correa-Salas said. “It was like, ‘wow. It would be an honor to be here, I thought, ‘I want to be part of this.’ It was easy.”

‘Dad, teach me’:The Phoenix singer’s love of music started with the family’s first piano

Musical Instrument Museum curator Rodrigo Correa-Salas poses for a photo at the MIM Conservation Lab on March 7, 2022 in Phoenix, Arizona.

“If you love what you do, you’ll be fine”

Correa-Salas was born in Santiago, Chile, surrounded by musicians. His grandfather was the conductor of the Santiago Symphony Orchestra. Her mother danced professionally as a Spanish dancer and ballerina.

The artistic community foreshadowed the careers of Correa-Salas and his brothers – one is now a painter and sculptor and the other is a bandleader in Miami, Florida.

Kilgore ISD School Board trustees voted last week to approve the purchase of new instruments and uniforms for the Kilgore High School Bulldog band.

KISD Superintendent Andy Baker said the need for new uniforms and musical instruments had been known since last year.

“Part of the needs assessment we did at the end of last year, which was part of the transition to a new high school, part of that was buying new high school band uniforms and start buying new group gear,” Boulanger said.

“These motions would purchase new band uniforms for the entire high school band. It can also give them extra uniforms, as the party goes up and down and the sizes change they will be prepared for this.

Baker said the second motion, for the purchase of new band instruments and equipment, would not cover everything the band needs at this time, but was a good start for that process.

“It’s not for everything we need, but it gets us started. During one of our budget workshops, we were planning somewhere in the coming year to set aside additional funds to reach the eventual amount we might need. »

Chief Financial Officer Revard Pfeffer said the district hasn’t purchased new group uniforms in nearly 20 years.

Administrator Lloyd Vanderwater moved to approve Stanbury Uniforms’ plan to purchase new uniforms for $106,556.80. Administrator Jason Smith seconded the motion and the administrators unanimously approved it.

Administrator Dana Sneed moved to approve the purchase of new band instruments and equipment from Tatum Music for $1,816 and from American Band Instrument Services for $13,462.80. Administrator Alan Clark seconded the motion and it too passed unanimously.

The donation campaign begins on March 7 and ends on March 20.

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — When the Marshall Fire burned through Boulder County, it took everything, big and small, from some kids in the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD).

“We’ve had a lot of students who have lost their homes and also, as part of that, their instruments,” said Aubrey Yeh, BVSD coordinator for language arts and humanities. “And so we have over 100 instruments lost in the fire.”

Yeh coordinates elective programs for Boulder Valley schools, including band and orchestra. She said musical instruments were expensive to replace and often time-consuming.

“Where are we going to start replacing all these instruments? Yes said. “Either the financial side, or where do we find all these instruments right away?”

Yeh turned to Bringing Music to Life. 9NEWS partners with the nonprofit each year to encourage people to donate used musical instruments to struggling school programs across the state.

“This is the first time we’ve had the opportunity to help in this way,” said Steve Blatt, executive director of Bringing Music to Life.

Blatt said it wasn’t the original design for Bringing Music to Life, but he said this year it was meant to be.

“We ended up with more instruments from our last record than expected and of course when word got out that they were in a lot of pain in Louisville and Superior, we thought okay, let’s do our part,” Blatt said. .

RELATED: Bringing Music to Life kicks off for 2021 with hopes of bouncing back from pandemic effect

For the students who ended up with ruins, Yeh said she thinks finding an instrument for them helps them stop feeling like victims.

“If they’re in school and they don’t have anything to play when a lot of their classmates do, it’s not very pleasant,” Yeh said.

Blatt said Bringing Music to Life is donating 40 instruments, from violins to trombones to guitars.

“Our repair partner, the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology, went out of their way to get them done quickly for the Boulder Valley School District,” Blatt said. “We try to find out what the needs are, what do they specifically need, and then check with what we have and try to match that.”

Yeh said these instruments can help a student’s mental health after losing everything.

“Music is wonderful and healing and a way to often express things beyond words and obviously there’s a lot of emotion going on right now,” Yeh said.

Yeh said she was grateful Bringing Music to Life could help.

“It’s been huge and really taken a load off me in terms of being able to take care of these kids and focus on that,” Yeh said.

The Bringing Music to Life Instrument Drive runs from March 7-20.

A new immersive sensory experience is coming to one of the Great Parks of Hamilton county parks.

Glenwood Gardens in Woodlawn will soon be home to an interactive music-themed garden, thanks in part to a $150,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks. (The total cost of the project is estimated at $300,000.)

Called “Music Garden at Highfield Discovery Center”, it will include large instruments for people to play, as well as a stage for children to let their creativity run wild.

“The Music Garden at Highfield Discovery Garden will allow children and users of all ages to understand the connections between nature and music while creating their own performances encouraged by the nature around them,” says Todd Palmeter, CEO of Great Parks , in a press release.

The park will include a path in the shape of a treble clef as well as instruments available to the public.

The garden will feature an accessible path shaped like a treble clef, and guests are encouraged to interact with instruments along the walkway. Great Parks says there will be five music stations, including a “collection of high-quality outdoor percussion musical instruments, such as double-sided chimes and a tung drum”.

Plant life was also selected to reinforce the theme. Great Parks does not specify what will grow there, except to say that greenery will be selected for inclusion based on “plant names, the sound they make, or visual appearances that may evoke musical inspiration.”

Construction on the Music Garden responds to public demand to see more
playful educational spaces. Specifically, the “Comprehensive Great Parks Master Plan” calls for “integrating nature, programming and facilities to provide unique offerings in each park that instill lasting memories in all users,” according to the release.

The Greater Cincinnati community will be invited to use the space informally and for organized programs, and Great Parks is looking to partner with Cincinnati schools that want to use it for their program. Great Parks plans to run programs that create sensory experiences for all ages and abilities, including the hearing and visually impaired, according to the press release.

Great Parks expects the project to be completed by the end of 2022.

In addition to the NatureWorks grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the project is also funded by the Dorothy B. Francis Charitable Foundation, the Highfield Foundation, and the Robert Gould Foundation.

Highfield Discovery Garden is located at 10397 Springfield Pike, Woodlawn. For more information, visit greatparks.org.

“Taliban burn musician’s musical instrument while local musician is crying. This incident happened in #ZazaiArub district #Paktia province #Afghanistan,” Omeri said in a tweet.

Apart from that, the group had banned live music at weddings and ordered men and women to celebrate in different rooms, the owner of a hotel in Afghanistan told Sputnik in October.

The Taliban Ministry for Promoting Virtue and Preventing Vice has also issued “religious guidelines” calling on Afghan television stations to stop showing women in dramas and soap operas.

Although the group has said these new guidelines may not be implemented, history has shown that the group is committed to implementing its version of harsh sharia law in the country, Dawn News reported.

As the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan after 20 years, experts also believe Afghan women are most likely to face an uncertain future under the terror groups’ rule. (ANI)
