Spaulding Middle receives $23,000 for musical instruments


LAMARCS —Spaulding Middle School orchestra students will soon be able to hone their craft on new musical instruments thanks to a $23,000 gift from Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

Hamadi Alexander, music and orchestra teacher at SMS, said the donation will enhance learning experiences for SMS students.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation for providing us with their instrument grant,” he said. “It means a lot to Spaulding Middle School and our musical scholars. The instruments we will receive from the Foundation will help support the initiative to expand music education in our school and give our students more opportunities to develop.

The funding will purchase the following instruments for SMS students:

Two Eastman alto saxophones.

A Yamaha snare stand.

The donation is made possible by funding from an anonymous donor in honor of Bobby Horowitz, who is passionate about the impact of music education on young people. The anonymous donor said: “The instruments are accompanied by love and passion for the future of children who love music.”

Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation “keeps music alive in our schools by providing vital support services to school districts and new musical instruments to underfunded music programs nationwide, giving underrepresented youth access to the many benefits of music education, leading them to success in school, and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music,” according to the foundation’s website.
