Pine Ridge Reservation Students Receive Over 900 Musical Instruments
PINE RIDGE, SD (KELO) – Students on the Pine Ridge Reservation are receiving a musical gift this holiday season. One organization has delivered over 900 instruments today to support music education programs.
You can just see the excitement on the faces of these students.
“It looks so new! The other one, the legs, I always have to adjust them because it wobbles and tries to fall all the time, so having this one is really great because I don’t have to hold it and watch very closely ” , Hemiya Standing Bear, student, says.
In total, Conscious Alliance and Tunes for Tots are donating a quarter of a million dollars worth of instruments across the Pine Ridge Reservation. Today we are at Pine Ridge High School.
“For us at Conscience Alliance, music is medicine. And children everywhere, not just on the reserve, they need this opportunity and it allows them to express themselves, ”said Natalie Hand, Conscience Alliance.
Music education teacher Ann Chesley said today was a very special day for her class.
“It’s a huge gift and I don’t know if I’ve ever been so talented with so much equipment and putting it together is going to be breathtaking,” said Ann Chesley, music education teacher.
“I’m really excited to see how they will use their instruments,” said Natalie Hand.
While there are still quite a few instruments left to unpack, these students can’t wait to get them out and start playing.
The band, Widespread Panic, who runs Tunes for Tots, paid for all instruments donated to music education programs across the reserve.
