Maryland Hall’s Paul Reed Smith School of Music returns in August with legendary greats


This summer, Paul Reed Smith and Maryland Hall will present the “3e Annual Paul Reed Smith School of Music at Maryland Hall. “The school’s teachers are prominent professional musicians, including renowned luthier Paul Reed Smith, legendary drummer Dennis Chambers, world-renowned guitarist John McLaughlin, saxophonist Bill Evans, famous Celtic guitarist Tony McManus, YouTube guitar teaching experts Tim Pierce and Tyler Larson, and Session directors Gary Grainger (groove and bass) and Greg Grainger (groove and drums), known worldwide as the “Grainger Brothers.” Some of the Also included are top musicians from Maryland, Michael Ault (guitar), Bryan Ewald (guitar), Benjie Porecki (keyboards), Mia Samone (vocals) and Bill Nelson (guitar).

Faced with the challenge of continuing the successful summer music school under COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, all teaching staff and Maryland Hall decided to make the school / summer camp accessible worldwide by offering a 4 day live virtual event. This year’s event will take place August 9-12, 2021. The school’s Masterclasses are open to musicians and enthusiasts of all ages from all over the world. Get ready for a fun and interactive music learning experience with some of the world’s most gifted musicians, all from the comfort of your home. In addition, each day, participants will be eligible to win one of the four PRS guitars offered at the event. As in years past, the school will make a donation to the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

The school theme will continue as “Understanding Rhythm, Harmony and Melody Makes You a Better Musician”. Even previous participants will find it useful to participate again and are encouraged to register for 2021 as it promises to be exciting learning opportunities with the addition of new world class segments, classes and instructors. Upgrades to last year’s format will be introduced, along with the ability for attendees to view and / or review segments at any time of the day that works best for them. All sessions will be taught via a live video stream and will include extensive interactive parts allowing students of all skill levels, ages and all instruments to engage with teachers.

Liquefied Creative Annapolis

Through an online Masterclass environment, all participants will receive real ways to watch music, experience music and improve their music playing skills through this experience. The masterclasses will include groove, harmony and music theory, guitar for beginners and advanced, melody, keyboard, vocals, drums and bass. “This is a great opportunity for students to learn directly from these amazing musicians and teachers on tour. Paul Reed Smith – Session Director

Smith is an internationally renowned luthier, musician and guitarist. In addition to performing and recording with his own band, Paul has performed with artists such as Santana, Alter Bridge and the Doobie Brothers. He was honored by Vintage Guitar Magazine as a Hall of Fame Inductee in 2011 and was named Maryland Small Business Owner of the Year in 2002.

Dennis Chambers – Visiting Professor

Chambers is an American drummer who has recorded and performed with John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament / Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, Niacin, Mike Stern, CAB, Greg Howe and many more. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2001. Despite a lack of formal training, Chambers became famous among drummers for his special techniques and speed. Chambers is particularly appreciated for his ability to play “in the pocket”. He has helped many young drummers, the best known being Tony Royster, Jr. Chambers started playing drums at the age of four and was playing in Baltimore area nightclubs at the age of six. years.

John McLaughlin – Visiting Professor

A pioneer of jazz fusion music, John is a talented musician, guitarist, composer, conductor and artist. He is considered one of the true geniuses of the music industry and is famous for performing with Miles Davis and his group Mahavishnu Orchestra. He is fluent in jazz, acoustics, blues, rock and some new types of music that he helped invent. He has performed in several touring groups, including Shakti.

Bill Evans – Visiting Professor

Bill Evans was an American jazz saxophonist who was part of the Miles Davis group in the 1980s. He has since conducted several of his own groups, including Soulgrass and Push. Bill is an accomplished recording artist with 17 solo albums and has received two Grammy nominations. In addition, he is fluent in a wide variety of musical genres and is considered one of the best saxophonists to ever play the instrument. Bill enjoys sharing his knowledge as a teacher.

Tony McManus – Visiting Professor

Tony McManus both extended and transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music. Tony is ranked by his peers and predecessors as some of the greatest in the guitar world. Guitarist the magazine ranked him among the 50 transcendent guitarists of all time. McManus is increasingly recognized as a pioneer figure in bringing together the fields of Celtic music and other genres of guitar. Over the years, Tony has recorded a catalog of dazzling albums, both solo and with friends. Tony has been teaching private lessons, group workshops and Masterclasses for over 20 years. After obtaining a BM Degree from Berklee College of Music, he began his career as a professional musician. In 2015, Larson founded Music is Win, which has carved out a place for itself in the music scene, with its videos totaling more than 350,000,000 views to date and 1.4 million subscribers on YouTube. Larson is also the creator of the very popular Guitar Super System, which to date has tens of thousands of guitarists. Gary Grainger’s seamless approach to virtually any style of music makes him one of the world’s most sought-after bassists. He has performed and made thousands of recordings, tours and television appearances with such notable artists as John Scofield, Dennis Chambers, Nancy Wilson, Nelson Rangel, George Duke, Maysa, Ken Navaro, Acoustic Alchemy, Eric Marienthal and Bill Evans.

Greg Grainger – Session Director

A skillful architect of rhythm, Greg Grainger is surprisingly fresh in his artistic and musical perspective. Hearing it, it’s easy to see why Whitney Houston signed him on for her 1988 world tour, why UK magazine Rhythm called his work “solid and tasteful” and dubbed him a “master of rhythm”. and why he is the drummer of international jazz artists such as Acoustic Alchemy and Kim Waters.
